I spent some time in Syria and Lebanon with some stunning results.

Splash of colour

Playing around with some simple materials I came up with this.

How: I placed the glass on a white sheet of paper with the back folded upwards to create the background.

For the high key white effect I got someone to hold another white sheet of card above me while I took the shot. This bounced the flash back down on the glass and gave the effect i was looking for. Total cost was about €0.20 cent for two sheets of white card from local stationary shop.

The liquid is cranberry juice and I used a coin the create the splash effect.. (I couldnt find anything else in the kitchen) Look closely at the bottom of the glass and you can see it.

Equipment: Canon 5D MKII , 24-105 lens and 550EX II flash gun.

Here comes the science: Aperture F8.0, shutter speed of 1/200, 65 mm focal length and ISO of 500.

RTE Winter Weather Comp Finalist

My shot “The Road” has been selected as one of the finalists in the Winter round of the RTE weather competition. Happy days indeed.

The image will be used on all the RTE weather bulletins on both RTE 1 and RTE 2 all day onThurs 11 March. Tune in or else.

Subject: Forest near the village of the Silvermines in Tipperary.

How: I balanced the camera on the stump of a tree and angled it directly upwards. The wide angle lens gives it a great effect.

Subject: Krakow City Centre near Jewish quarter of Kazimierz.

How: Taken handheld on the 50mm with the ISO turned up to avoid camera shake.

Light Painting.. How do you do it?

Subject: Another little bit of painting with light.

Equipment: Canon 5D MkII and 24-105L

How: Coming up with new ideas for shots each day is no easy task. Painting with light is a cool little way of creating something very different. This shot took a little bit of time and patience. Theres no simple way to do this except trial and error. Its not a very hard technique, set the camera on tripod, set the time for a nice long period of time and then paint out whatever you like. You can actually see my ghostly shape in between the end of Day and 30. I used an everyday torch for this but you can use any type of light source you like. Check out the cool video below my shot made entirely by people painting with light.

Photographer arrested for taking pictures of gathering in local town centre.

Was this Iraq? China? No, England, the censorship hotbed that is Accrington town centre in Lancashire.

Anti-terror laws introduced in as part of the Terrorism Act in the UK have lead to a number of unsavory incidents involving photographers.

The photographer in question was taking pictures of Christmas celebrations in the town, and this was deemed anti-social behavior by police. Luckily he had the presence of mind to capture his arrest on video and you can see it all here.

The Guardian have unearthed a series of pieces similar in nature to this in recent months and its a worrying trend.

I know the Taliban are hardly party people but I think trying to assassinate Santa is a little extreme even for their standards.

Galway City with bokeh

Subject: Bokeh, as much as I think that word is very nerdy and pretentious, it is what it is! It’s fags and coffee on a bin in Galway City Centre.

Equipment: Canon 5D MkII and 70-200 2.8 L

How: To blur out the background like this you need to select a very low aperature, e.g 2.8, 1.8 etc. Aperture is the diameter of a lens opening. In basic terms, the larger the aperture opening the more light reaches the camera. A low aperture will blur out the background and create the cool lighting effects like this.

The Golden Arches – McDonalds

Subject: The house of Ronald McDonald, Terryland, Galway City.

Equipment: Canon 5D MkII and 70-200L 2.8.

How: Possibly no other symbol in the world is so instantly recognisable. According to the official website the famous “Golden Arches” are now displayed on over 31,000 outlets worldwide. The bright yellow M is arguably one of the best logo designs in the history of marketing.
